Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child have to be Catholic to attend Our Lady of Lourdes?
No, we gladly welcome all children of all faiths, and those with no religious affiliations. In fact, nearly 30% of our students are not Catholic. All students are expected to participate in the full range of coursework and activities, including instruction in the Catholic faith.
What are the grade levels and ages served at Our Lady of Lourdes?
We provide all day education to students in grades PreKindergarten through 8th grade. Our youngest students need to be four years old by September 30th to enter our PreK class and five for our Kindergarten class. We have two classes per grade level except our PreK which has only one class.
Where do the students typically go after 8th grade?
Our students disperse across many public and private schools. Several choose to attend Benedictine and Saint Gertrude, the all boy and all girl Catholic high schools. Many apply and receive admission to the Specialty Centers at the area public high schools in Chesterfield, Henrico, and Hanover. Our students that reside in the City of Richmond may choose to apply to the Maggie Walker Governor’s School or Open High School. And we always have a few that move onto another private school in the area. Bottom line, our graduates excel wherever they choose to continue their education!
What standardized tests do Our Lady of Lourdes students take?
Students in grades 2-8 take the Scantron Performance Series assessment in the fall, winter and spring. This assessment in reading and math provides meaningful information to teachers, parents and administration to help each child learn and thrive at Our Lady of Lourdes School.
Why a Catholic school education?
While our students on average score substantially above average on national standardized testing, we are able to provide things not available in a public school setting. We pray together. We attend Mass together. We serve our community together. We have a faculty and staff committed to fostering a Christ-like spirit of respect, compassion and service based on a foundation of Catholic teaching.
Are your teachers qualified?
Our Lady of Lourdes has made a commitment to recruiting the highest quality teachers to minister to our students. A majority of our teachers hold master’s degrees and have been a part of our school community for over ten years. Many teachers’ children attend or have attended Our Lady of Lourdes School. We provide professional development classes monthly to ensure our teachers receive the most current and well informed teaching tools. Our teachers care deeply for each child and strive to meet each child where they are on their educational journey.
Do you have an up-to-date technology program?
The short answer is yes! Depending on grade and resource, our classrooms have access to iPads, Chromebooks, document cameras, Apple TVs, projectors and SmartBoards. Students attend a weekly technology class to ensure they are fully prepared to use all software and technology available to them. However, we strongly feel that technology is an enhancement tool and believe our teachers are the best source for instruction.
When does the school day start and end? Do you have extra hours of care?
Our school day starts at 8am and ends at 2:50pm. We have a fully staffed Before and After School care program for families during the school year. Students may arrive for morning care drop off as early as 7am and stay in our after school care program until 6pm at a cost to parents.
